Talent Doesn't Always Come With a Certificate
RCA retains two entry routes. Neither is a lesser path — they are two different kinds of evidence that you are ready for an intensive practical programme.
Previous film-school training is not automatically required. What matters is your potential, commitment and readiness to learn.
Two Ways In
Which Route Applies to You?
You apply through one route or the other. The application form is the same, and Admissions will tell you if anything further is needed.
Route One
Academic Entry Route
For applicants who meet RCA's stated academic entry requirements.

Creative / Professional Entry Route
For applicants whose creative ability, professional experience, portfolio, audition or other relevant experience provides an alternative basis for admission.
Experience RCA recognises
If your experience has come through work, performance, filmmaking, content creation, theatre, photography, design, music, television or another creative path, we want to hear about that too.

Entry requirements vary by programme, and the Creative / Professional route is assessed on the evidence you can provide rather than a fixed checklist.
RCA Admissions will confirm the requirements that apply to your chosen programme and tell you which route suits your background. Ask before you apply — an enquiry is free and is not an application.
Do I need previous film or television experience?
Not necessarily.
RCA welcomes applicants through both academic and creative/professional entry routes. Previous film-school training is therefore not automatically required.
Can I apply if I don't meet the standard academic entry requirements?
Potentially, yes.
Applicants may be considered through RCA's Creative / Professional Entry Route, where relevant creative ability, professional experience, portfolio, audition or other appropriate evidence may provide an alternative basis for admission.
Admission remains subject to RCA's assessment of the application.
Will I need an audition, interview or portfolio?
That depends on the programme and application.
Where appropriate, RCA may request an audition, interview, portfolio, writing sample or other course-relevant material as part of the admissions process.
Applicants will be advised if anything further is required.

Submitting an application does not guarantee admission. Admission is subject to RCA's assessment of the application and any additional selection requirements applicable to the programme or applicant.
