Course Overview

Course Objective

To equip students with advanced skills and knowledge in producing for film and television — enabling them to develop, source funding for and produce high-quality content across platforms, while effectively managing the logistical and operational aspects of production.

Course Curriculum

Each semester is 20 weeks, combining business and management theory with hands-on production projects.

Industry Overview

  • How the film and TV industry works in Ghana and the rest of the world
  • Roles and responsibilities of a Producer and Production Manager
  • The various stages of production

Key Departments

  • Overview of the Director, Cinematographer, Sound Recordist and other key staff
  • Overview of post-production: the editing process and sound design
  • Choosing and targeting investors
  • Structure of a business plan using visual aids (PowerPoint)
  • Letter writing and proposal writing skills
  • Writing a press release and creating publicity via digital marketing
  • Understanding the purpose of film festivals and film markets
  • Identifying possible sponsors for a TV series and suitable networks
  • Recouping investment through cinema and streaming platforms
  • Self-management and basic office skills
  • Communication and negotiating
  • Problem solving and decision making
  • Team building, supportive supervision and monitoring & evaluation
  • Understanding the script, screenwriting process and script development
  • How a script is broken down in pre-production
  • Developing compelling storylines for film and TV series; analysing the target audience

  • Finding and managing locations; negotiating with location owners
  • Permitting and compliance
  • Coordinating logistics: catering and technical equipment

Talent & Crew

  • Casting: making the right choices and understanding their impact on the film
  • Crewing: selecting the right team for the project
  • Basic legal contracts: key negotiating points with cast and crew
  • Managing production teams and schedules — planning the day's shot list
  • Creating and managing production budgets for pre-production, production and post-production
  • Creating and managing production schedules; dealing with scheduling conflicts
  • Securing funding for film and television projects
  • Tracking expenses and staying on budget

On-Set Management

  • Coordinating equipment and crew; managing logistics and transportation
  • Implementing safety protocols; managing risk and emergencies

Compliance & Practice

  • Understanding industry regulations and ensuring compliance on set
  • Practical exercise: 5-minute script with a narrative structure handed to students
  • Week 15 — Team Brief: Meet the assigned team; break down the script and discuss creative issues (art direction, lighting, style, pace, shot list); undertake casting, crewing and all logistics as producer
  • Week 16 — Pre-Production: Pre-production on the 5-minute project with the assigned team
  • Week 17 — Production: Shoot the 5-minute collaborative project
  • Week 18 — Post-Production: Understanding and overseeing post-production processes
  • Screen and review all final projects from the semester
  • Discuss successes and challenges across all departments — directing, camera, sound, production
  • Identify areas for improvement and share best practices for future projects
