Course Overview
Course Objective
Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of art direction principles and practices, as well as the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the film and television industry.
What You'll Learn
Apply set design elements — colour, texture, lighting and space — to create cohesive and effective sets
Design costumes that serve character development, period and narrative style
Apply makeup techniques — natural, character and special effects — for film and television
Execute basic special effects including prosthetics and on-location practical effects
Analyse and critique art direction, costume and makeup in professional productions
Collaborate across departments on a full production from pre-production to final review

- ›Create a digital set design using SketchUp or Autodesk Revit
- ›Create a set dressing plan using Adobe Creative Suite

- ›Week 15 — Pre-production: Meet your team, break down the script and discuss creative issues relating to art direction
- ›Week 16 — Pre-production: Review of art direction, set design, costume and makeup principles; begin pre-production on the 5-minute project
- ›Week 17 — Production: Shoot the 5-minute collaborative project
- ›Week 18 — Post-production: Students complete the project incorporating art direction
- ›Screen and review all final projects from the semester
- ›Discuss successes and challenges across all departments — directing, sound, production
- ›Identify areas for improvement and share best practices for future projects
